The loudspeaker category has slowly undergone a transformation over the past several year in which in-wall and in-ceiling products are now the top-selling models for many audio manufacturers.
The reason for this trend is simple: architectural loudspeakers are unobtrusive within a home environment, perform at a level comparable to traditional speakers and are available at costs competitive with freestanding speakers.
Basics 4-1-1
The umbrella term "architectural loudspeaker" is used to refer to in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. This term also represents the fact that in-wall and in-ceiling speakers are products that are mounted within the building structure itself.
Because these speakers are installed within a wall or ceiling, they require more labor than traditional "freestanding" loudspeakers. And, because of the acoustic limitations of speaker placement, it takes skill and experience to extract the best performance from these products.
Pluses and Minuses 4-1-1
The biggest advantage of in-wall and in-ceiling speakers is they're not products that take up floor space. Audio manufacturers also support the low-profile attributes by including paintable grills, flush mount frames and other décor-enhancing features.
The biggest disadvantage of architectural speakers is that placement options can be limited.
Whether due to homeowner preference or structural impediments, these limitations can, in turn, affect performance. In fact, some of the "openback" products (speakers that have drivers and electronics exposed on the backside) are susceptible to wall vibrations and sound leakage into adjacent rooms. These problems can detract from the speaker's performance.
Installation 4-1-1
When working with architectural loudspeakers, trained installers typically carry a drill gun (with a Phillips tip), a utility knife and wire strippers to securely mount speakers.
Architectural speakers install easily into a new home where there is more access to wall cavities and more room to cut and drill.
Depending on the number of speakers, and the level of complexity of the install, most speakers on the market are designed to install quickly. But total times can vary.
Profits 4-1-1
The loudspeaker category is probably the most profitable product in the entire home tech market. With direct-from-manufacturer margins as high as 70 points, loudspeakers can be lucrative.
Professional electronics installation companies that work as subcontractors for builders will, in many cases, negotiate a situation that satisfies both parties. This ensures homebuyer satisfaction as well as profitability for the builder and their own electronics business.
Warranty 4-1-1
Like most product categories, manufacturer warranty coverage varies. Many companies offer long-term limited warranties that span five or 10 years — and some even offer lifetime warranties.
Most of the provisions in these warranties cover such items as normal usage and proper installation.
