Out of the Eye of the Beholder

From Page #46

Constructing a room with a nice home theater system that is completely concealed poses a challenge to this installer and his team.

When it comes to audio and video equipment, it's a safe best that most folks don't like to see wires everywhere. This is a reasonable demand that most builders and installers can satisfy.

And then there are some folks who demand a bit more. This group doesn't want to see speakers and televisions anywhere either. With this group, builders and installers have a bit more work cut out for them.

Dave Gilbert of Cherry Hill, N.J.-based Hi-Fi Sales dealt with a client who falls into the second category. Gilbert worked with a designer and a builder from the beginning stages of a new construction project for clients who wanted a home theater, but didn't want to see any audio/video equipment in it.

A plasma TV over the fireplace was the best option for a window-heavy living room. Sleek as the Fujitsu 42-inch model may be, it was still visible up there. Gilbert used a VisionArt flush-mounted, retractable picture system with a custom frame to conceal the TV. With a touch of a button, the VisionArt reveals the plasma screen for viewing.

Concealing surround sound speakers posed another challenge. Small cube speakers were built in over the fireplace mantle. And the subwoofer was built in under the window seat.
