What is RSS and syndication?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a way of having all the news from TecHomebuilder.com delivered straight to your desktop or online feed reader instead of visiting the site everyday. What's the benefit of doing this? Say you're regularly read the news on TecHomeBuilder.com, ElectronicHouse.com, and CE-Pro.com. Instead of going to each website and navigating to the content you want, you may set up a service that automatically grabs new stories for you every hour or so if they're available, pools them into one place, and makes it "really simple" (hence the clever title) for you to read all the news from three different sources on one page.
So how do I get started?
First, you're going to need an "aggregator," an application or website where you can paste the RSS links. There's plenty of free options out there, some integrated into services you may already be using! Yahoo and MSN have these options through their "My Yahoo" and "My MSN" pages. Bloglines is probably the most popular choice, these days while Pluck and Newsgator have excellent interfaces. All of these options are free, so sign up for an account and see which one works best for you.
You can also download a program to handle access RSS feeds. FeedDemon is probably the most popular choice for the PC, though several other options are available. For the Macintosh, NetNewsWire is by far the standard, although NewsFire is another great choice: very simple, user-friendly, and looks as hot as it says it is. You'll have to pay for these programs, but all are inexpensive and have a trial version you may test out before deciding to buy.
Adding the TecHomeBuilder.com News Feed.
So your aggregator account is set up and ready to go. Simply look for the orange RSS graphic on our article pages. Mouse over the image, right-click (PC) or ctrl-click (Mac), and copy the link. (Choose "Copy Shortcut" for Internet Explorer, "Copy Link Location" for Netscape and Mozilla, or "Copy Link Address" for Opera). Then visit your aggregator account or open the aggregator program on your computer, find the option to add a new feed, and paste in the link. Click OK and your feeder should grab the most recent headlines right away. From them on the aggregator will check the site at specific intervals and checking out the latest headlines from this and other EH sites is a breeze.
If you signed up for an account with Yahoo, MyMSN, Bloglines, Newsgator, or Pluck, you can make the process even easier by clicking the appropriate button in the RSS box as you would any link, which will take you directly to your account and add the feed in for you. Couldn't be easier!
